Day 1: From Marangu gate to Mandara;
The journey at day one begins from the hotel where you will be sleeping. This can be from Arusha town or Moshi or Marangu within Kilimanjaro region. From the hotel to Marangu gate, you will travel through the village areas of the wachagga people cutting through their farms and plantations on a tarmac road. At the gate, you are going to spend a few minutes signing in and making the final preparation. Making sure that you have all the requirements and your day pack has enough drinking water, food, and extra clothing. From Marangu gate to Mandara camp is approximately 8 km and it should take at least 5 hours.
You shall be walking through the mountain forest densely populated with trees, shrubs and herbs of different species that have created a home for different species of animals. The most melodious species of birds can be found here and their songs will be entertaining you through the forest. Blue monkeys too can be seen on your way to Mandara doing their things and watching tourist inquisitively. End of day one break at Mandara camp. You will spend a night here.
This camp has a capacity for 60 to 80 hikers. A place to sleep is given on reaching the camp and this should be in a wooden hut with 6 to 8 bunks. There is a good water supply at this camp and to the toilets. At the evening, food will be served in a communal dinning room and after dinner, overnight.
Day 2: Mandara hut 2720masl – Horombo hut 3720masl
You shall be climbing through heather and moorlands zone to Horombo hut about 11.6 km away from Mandara camp. This should take about 6 hours. On a clear sunny day, you should be able to catch beautiful volcanic features and other scenic beauty on a camera. The rugged Mawenzi is so vivid and welcoming on your right but the route should lead you through lands of heather, protea, lobelia and senecio among other species of plants. After walking 6 hours through the beautiful land, you should be final at Horombo where you will be given washing bowls with hot water to wash, rest, have dinner in the evening then overnight.
Day 3: At Horombo hut 3720masl
An extra day at Horombo which is optional could be significantly important for acclimatization. You can get to hike Mawenzi ridge, observe and study rocks and minerals of kilimanjaro and have a good view of Mawenzi peak (the third highest peak in Africa from Kibo and mount Kenya respectively) also known as Hans Meyer’s peak. There are also different plant species dominating the camp area. The likes of giant groundsels, giant lobelia, species of helichrysum…
Day 4: Horombo hut 3720masl – Kibo hut 4720masl
You will be climbing through the alpine desert. After a few kilometres is saddle, a region between Mawenzi and Kibo lava cones. Saddle is almost a desert plain with rock outcrops and hills that gives an impression of someone in a different planet and the landscape is so good. You will need a lot of water to prevent dehydration during the entire tour and you should inform your guide of any sign of sickness. For more information on this, please visit our health and acclimatization page. Kibo is 10.6 km from Horombo and you should be there at least in 6 hours.
Day 4: Kibo hut 4720masl – Uhuru peak 5895masl – Horombo 3720masl –
On to Uhuru
At Kibo, you will have some food, take a rest, and get yourself prepared for Uhuru. Sometime tourists may climb to Uhuru during the day but this depends on the weather. Waking up at the middle of the night and getting ready ambitiously for the main event is just what everyone do at Kibo hut. You will wake up at 2300hr and get yourself ready. After having a cup of tea with biscuits, you will commence to Uhuru. The distance is 6 km and it should take about 8 hours to be at Uhuru. This is the tough part but the trick is to take it slowly. The zigzag path which gets more steeper and with a lot of scree takes you to Gilmans point (5686masl) through Hans Meyer caves (5200masl). The path to Uhuru from Gilman’s is snowy white and miraculously beautiful from our point of view. Uhuru is the final point and the highest point in Africa. People pause here for photos and appreciation of ones achievement. You can take your time here depending on the weather but after you are satisfied we can start descending to Kibo a journey of 3 hours. At Kibo hut, you can rest for a while then commence to Horombo. Coming down from Uhuru peak to Horombo takes less time and effort. People are normally happy at Horombo partly because they made it and partly the friendly weather. It’s here where you will spend your last night at Kilimanjaro National park from Uhuru.
Day 5: Horombo hut 3720masl – Marangu gate 1860masl
After breakfast, commence the descent to Marangu gate. It is approximately 19.7 km to Marangu gate from Horombo and it should take at least 6 hours to be there. You shall be given certificates once at the gate and you made it to Uhuru (golden) or Gilman’s point (green cirtificates) and shake hands before starting to the hotels and the end of the journey.
